Chestnuts roasted with sugar, tang2 chao3 li4 zi5 (糖炒栗子in Chinese), also called marrons glaces, is a popular snack in autumn and winter in China. As a local flavor, todays snack wins the most popularity in Beijing and Tianjin. It is said that the snack originated from the Song Dynasty (960 A.D.-1279 A.D.). The cooking method is to choose fresh chestnuts and pour them into a pot with coarse sand and syrup, then stir-fly them continuously till well-done. Moreover, chestnut is titled as the King of nuts, and was called the ginseng fruit by foreigners. Hence, chestnut is no more than a delicious snack but an effective medicine for some diseases. It can nourish human body as ginseng, ren2 shen1 (人参in Chinese), astragali radix, huang2 qi2 (黄芪in Chinese) and Chinese angelica, dang4 gui1 (当归in Chinese).
